Librarian beginner’s guide: your first hour

The room looks impossible because you are seeing 3,072 separate objects. Your real job is smaller: identify one series, finish one row, then use each completed row to make the next one easier.

Quick answer

Read the floor maps, collect the four keys early, complete obvious 3- and 5-volume series for quick points, then invest in Assemble and Auto-Shelving. A blue section light confirms that a row is correct.

1. Learn the rule the game rarely explains clearly

A book belongs to a themed section such as Monsterology, Necromancy, Romance, or History. Books from the same named series must share one row and their volume numbers must be in order. When the whole row is correct, its section indicator turns blue and your completed-row count increases.

  • Use the wall maps to connect section codes such as 1A or 2N to a topic.
  • Match the full series title first; cover color is only a supporting clue.
  • Put numbered volumes left to right in ascending order.
  • If the light stays dark, check for a missing, misplaced, or reversed volume.

2. Get the movement upgrades before the long grind

Four hidden keys open chests on the second-floor landing. Their rewards improve sprinting, jumping, and carrying capacity. These upgrades reduce travel time for the rest of the run and do not count as major magic for the Anti-Magic Master achievement.

3. Earn your first spell points with easy rows

Do not start with a ten-volume series buried across the entire room. Look for repeated covers and short series. Three- and five-volume rows finish faster, which means earlier upgrade points. The game shows how many additional rows are needed for your next point; press Tab to open the ability screen.

  1. Choose one obvious cover family from a nearby pile.
  2. Carry every matching volume you can see to its correct floor.
  3. Stage uncertain books near the right section instead of crossing the room repeatedly.
  4. Finish the row only when the full numbered series is ready.

4. Use magic as a workflow, not five isolated buttons

Insight helps reveal related volumes, Assemble gathers volumes from the same series, Sorting fixes the order in your hands, Auto-Shelving places held books, and Shelf Guide helps locate the destination. For a relaxed first run, learn what each does. For speed, build around Assemble plus Auto-Shelving.

5. Avoid these beginner traps

Trusting color alone

Different topics can share similar covers. Confirm the title and section theme.

Carrying random books

A mixed stack creates extra trips. Gather by series, category, or floor.

Ignoring short series

Small rows are the quickest way to earn the first upgrade points.

Assuming “mostly full” is complete

The blue indicator—not appearance—is the confirmation that counts.

Your first-session checklist

  • Read both floor maps.
  • Unlock Sprint and Jump, then both carry upgrades.
  • Complete several short or visually obvious rows.
  • Open the ability screen and spend the first points deliberately.
  • Leave difficult books staged near their likely floor for later.
